Do you have time to help WHAS?
Last Updated on Wednesday, 08 July 2009 18:48 Written by Webmaster
We need new folks to support with different WHAS activities.
The Conservation Committee needs members to attend state and local meetings, work on conservation legislation, or write letters to the editor. The Education Committee can use people to give presentations and offer classes or just to act as an extra pair of hands at an outreach booth.
Margaret Green will be retiring as Program Committee Chair and would love to work side-by-side for some time with someone who can take her place in arranging for programs.
The Snowy Plover / Horned Lark / Leadbetter State Park project needs a coordinator.
If you would like to help contact a committee chair or Charlotte Persons at 360-578-3949 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Do you like Backyard Birding?

The WHAS Board of Directors is developing a new ad hoc committee on Backyard Birding. This is an exciting opportunity to promote an activity that includes more than 65 million people in the U.S, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service. Many WHAS members have much knowledge and experience that they can share. Who knows where it will lead? That will be the first subject that the committee will address. There are so many possible topics from which to choose, including education on plantings and habitats, back yard bird counts, certification, techniques on feeding and watering, and sharing of ideas.
Larry Turner has volunteered to lead the effort and has already received some great ideas from members. If you would like to participate or have ideas/suggestions, please contact him at 360-423-3556 (leave message if not home) or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are looking forward to a busy time at Nelson Creek this spring and summer. Egg mass surveys for frogs and salamanders in March, vegetation transects in April, and building demolition in May, just for a start.
Leadbetter "First Saturday"

Come join Friends of Willapa Refuge on Saturday, July 3, at the Leadbetter Unit of Willapa NWR for some trail work! This is the July production of "First Saturday" volunteer programs where Friends members and the public are invited to "get hands dirty" in support of the Refuge. For this July 3, they extend a special invite to all non-local Friends members who will be visiting the Peninsula for the holiday weekend! All ages and abilities are welcome; they've plenty of tasks for everyone's contributions.
They'll meet no later than 9am at the Leadbetter Unit parking lot (main lot, at the far end of Stackpole Road) and be finished by 2pm, latest.Thank you to Ivy Pull Volunteers

Many thanks to the volunteers who helped with the ivy pull on February 27. The weather cooperated for most of the morning, with rain holding off until after the work was done. The deluge started as soon as the pizza arrived as the hungry participants dove in for lunch. We pulled ivy, cut other invasive species such as holly and scotch broom and planted native plants and trees.
