Ways to help WHAS
Written by Webmaster Tuesday, 11 October 2011 12:54
Here are some ways you can help WHAS in its mission to support ecologically responsible ways of life, to help maintain biologically diverse habitats, and to promote environmental understanding and enjoyment of nature:
- Become a member of Willapa Hills Audubon Society
- Count birds for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count.
- Attend public meetings in support of local conservation efforts,
- Help in one of our committees from conservation to backyard birding,
- Help producing and promoting our Backyard Bird Calendar,
- Help staff a WHAS table at an event,
- Bring awareness to Earth Day by working the WHAS booth,
- Offer and lead field trips for adults and/or children,
- Donate an item for the Annual Dinner Auction,
- Participate in the springtime Birdathon,
- Make a donation through our member form, and no you do not need to become a member, though we love to have you around,
- Check out the other possibilities further down on this site.
If you are interested in any of the above tasks or if you have other ideas to help WHAS with its mission, contact any of the board members on our contact page.
Christmas Bird Count (CBC) Overview

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is citizen-science at its best. You can help with this effort, whether you have ever gone birdwatching or not. You will have the opportunity to meet new prople with interests in birds, or spend time with friends from previous years. Observant eyes are needed for that day: the more the better. You can point out where you see birds and experts in your group can do the identifying. If you do know some of the birds in your area, so much the better....
Backyard Birding wants your bird list

Do you keep a list of birds that you see in your yard? The WHAS Backyard Birding Committee would like to post your list, along with others, on a soon-to-come part of the WHAS web site. Several newer members have asked what kinds of birds they might see in their yard. There are bird lists for the area - see the Cowlitz County list on the web site, but we think that more specific lists of what people are actually seeing in their yards would be very helpful. Eventually, it would be nice to distinguish
Do you have time to help WHAS?

We need new folks to support with different WHAS activities.
The Conservation Committee needs members to attend state and local meetings, work on conservation legislation, or write letters to the editor. The Education Committee can use people to give presentations and offer classes or just to act as an extra pair of hands at an outreach booth.
The Snowy Plover / Horned Lark / Leadbetter State Park project needs a coordinator.

Do you like Backyard Birding?

The WHAS Board of Directors is developing a new ad hoc committee on Backyard Birding. This is an exciting opportunity to promote an activity that includes more than 65 million people in the U.S, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service. Many WHAS members have much knowledge and experience that they can share. Who knows where it will lead? That will be the first subject that the committee will address. There are so many possible topics from which to choose, including education on plantings and habitats, back yard bird counts, certification, techniques on feeding and watering, and sharing of ideas.
Larry Turner has volunteered to lead the effort and has already received some great ideas from members. If you would like to participate or have ideas/suggestions, please contact him at 360-423-3556 (leave message if not home) or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
